Made Ice Cream Today!

Today was a great day with my class!  We have been working on the three states of matter and made ice cream in baggies today!  I haven't done this in a few years and it was fun to do it again!  My students enjoyed mixing the milk, sugar and flavoring (either vanilla or chocolate) and shaking their bags of ice and salt to make it freeze!  If you have never done this before, it is a must!  Here are the easy breezy steps to "baggie ice cream!"  Great lesson for changing liquids to solids.  Give it a try!
Ice Cream in a Bag:
Each student will need one smaller sized (sandwich sized) and one (gallon) sized ziploc bag.  I recommend freezer bags because they are more durable.
1/2 cup of milk
1 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla or chocolate syrup
4 cups of ice
4 tablespoons of salt (table salt and sea salt work fine-doesn't have to be rock salt)
Directions:
Each student will measure the milk, sugar and flavoring liquid mixture into their sandwich baggie and seal tightly.  They then put the four cups of ice into their gallon baggie and sprinkle with the tablespoons of salt.  Lower the smaller baggie inside of the gallon baggie making sure that both are closed well!  You don't want any salt water to leak into your ice cream!  They seal, shake, shake, shake...for about five minutes or so and presto...your kiddos will love their sweet solid treat once they are finished!  Give it a try.  Another teacher I work with said she wanted to make it next week using coffee cans instead of baggies!  I'll have to try that next time!  Thanks-Yvonne
